Carroll County Farm Bureau Board Meeting 1/17/05

The meeting was held at the Delphi Farm Bureau Insurance office and called to order by President Mike Beale. Shawn Ashby, led 10 board members in the pledge to the flag. Rusty Ashby read devotions. The secretary’s report: reading of the minutes from the November & December meetings were waived as they were enclosed with January’s meeting notice. The minutes were approved as written. There was no Treasurer’s report as the Insurance office was closed in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

Comments were made about the State Convention and Discussion Meet

New Business: Mike suggested that we purchase a set of farming videos for each of the Libraries in the county in an attempt to help better educate our youth about farming. Mike talked with one librarian and she said they often make “care packages” or bundles of videos & books for local daycares. Sacha Brown moved that we purchase a set of videos for each of the libraries at $75 each. Shawn seconded, motion passed.

District 3 Officers Meeting: January 26th at White Co Fairgrounds. RSVP by Friday to Janice Wilson.

Annual Meeting: Discussion of when, where, elections, & resolutions followed. Shawn made a motion that we have the Annual Meeting on March 15th, 6 p.m. at Honan Hall in Delphi. Sacha seconded, motion passed. Janice Frey suggested that we have our Lugar essay winners read their essay. Janice Wilson volunteered Don Vilwock to speak, since he hasn’t spoke in Carroll Co since taking his Presidential office. Up for election this year are President, Vice, and Pet & Hobby Leader, as well as delegates. Mike said he would run again for President and he will check with Ryan and Tracie Swayze about retaining their current positions. Volunteers & Nominations for 2005 delegates are: Mike Beale, Mark Justice, Craig Frey, Shawn Ashby, Kathy Justice, & Ty Brown. Resolutions will be discussed at the next meeting. Write them down and bring them with you.

Ag Day: Mike thinks it is March 17th, more details at a later date.

Web Site Signs: Mike also suggested that we have signs made to stick in the yard at each office advertising our web site. Mark moved that we have signs made advertising www.carrollcountyfarmbureau.com, Craig seconded, motion passed. Shawn will take care of getting them made and posting them in the yards.

State House Visit: Anyone interested in visiting the State House and talking with our representatives the date will be 2-15-05. So far Mark, Craig, Mike, & Ty will be going.

Membership Report: Betty Ward reported that Carroll County needs 193 more voting and 773 more paid for total membership.

Women’s Leader Report: Janice Frey reminded everyone that February 7th is Food Check Out day. Shawn moved that we do activities similar to last year (flyers in grocery bags, article in newspaper, & donations to food pantry & birthright), Craig seconded, motion passed. Sacha made a motion to give the food pantry and Birthright $100 each, Kathy seconded and motion carried. February 8th is the annual Friends Day in Burlington. Spring Conference is March 4-5, she needs your reservations by February 18th. Motion was made for the county to pay for hotel and meal tickets of the attendees, Mark seconded, motion passed.

Young Farmers: Mark informed everyone that the Young Farmer Conference will be on January 28-29-30, 2005 be sure to register ASAP. Those attending thus far are: Brown’s, Beale’s, Ashby’s and Justice’s. The January Marketing Meeting on the 18th has been cancelled. They also have planned a Ski Trip for February 26-27. Kathy handed out rates and hotel locations. Potential plans were discussed and details will be given at a later date. Mark & Kathy are also meeting with the District YF representatives next month to discuss plans for 2005. They have some great ideas such as a trip to the Chicago Board of Trade and/or museums and then the Farm Progress Show in Decatur, IL this fall.

Legislative/Current Events: Shawn Ashby gave a quick web site update and a school board update. He also gave the highlights of the “core 40” program that is proposed for the Indiana School Systems.

Field Staff Report: Janice Wilson highlighted her board report giving special note to the District 3 Cabinet Meeting on the 26th, FB to DC program, and Member Discounts at Choice Hotels & Grainger.

Refreshments were served by Rusty Ashby and the meeting was adjourned. Next meeting will be February 21st at 7 p.m. Janice Frey will have Devotions & Refreshments.
